Thurs., Feb. 9, 1809
WHEREAS, my son, DAVID, a youth 18 years old last April enlisted under CAPT. 
NICKS, sometime last fall; and as it was contrary to my wishes, I demanded of 
CAPT. NICKS his discharge under penalty of the law in case he refused, CAPT. 
NICKS thereupon granted him a discharge which is now in my possession. Fearing 
that my son might be induced to join the army again, I forewarned LT. 
HAMILTON, on the 29th of January, from enlisting him; but on my return from 
the country a few days ago, where I had been necessarily absent, I found my 
son had gone with the recruits under the command of LT. HAMILTON to 
Washington. Now I forewarn all persons from harboring the said, DAVID, 
officers from taking him under their authority or forcing him out of the 
state, and all captains from taking him on board their vessels.
