Agent Holtfeed 1 July 1838 Thomas Jinks of Wake County in the state of North Carolina who was a Corporal in the company commanded by Captain Quinn of the regiment commanded by Colonel Shepard in the N. Carolina line for the term of 1779 - 9 months Inscribed on the roll of North Carolina at the rate of 8 dollars per month to commence the 20 of November 1823. Certificate 28 Feb 1833 Certificate of Pension issued the 24 of Jan 1824 and sent to the Hon Willie P. Mangum, House of Representative. Drafted men not considered in Continental Soldiers. Explained & amended by supplemental Declaration 30 Oct 1823. see over. Richard District of North Carolina On this Eleventh day of August 1818, before me the subscriber, one of the Judges of the United States for the District aforesaid, personally appeared Thomas Jinks aged sixty seven years or there abouts, resident in Wake Count in the said District who being by me first duly sworn, according to law, doth on his oaths make the following declarations in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of congress, entitled "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land & navel service of the United States in the revolutionary war". That some time during the revolutionary war & towards the latter part of that time he the said Thomas Jinks (was drafted or bat??led in the said County of Wake to go into the nine months service & did thereupon go & enter in the company commanded by Captain Donoho,of the Regiment commanded by Col Dixon (its number not recollected) in the North Carolina line on the Continental establishment in the war aforesaid that he was transferred to Captain Ramsey's company of the regiment commanded by Col Mebane? its number not recollected and was at last put into Capt Quinn's Company. That he continued to serve in the said army in the service of the United States until the end of the said nine months when he was discharged from service at Charleston, S. C. which discharge he has long time lost; that he was in the battles of Stono and Savannah and that he is in reduced circumstances & stand in need of the assistance of his country for support. Sworn to & declared before me, the day & year aforesaid. H. Potter, Justice NOTE:Stono Ferry battle. Jul 20 1779. Charleston Co. "Hal" Dixon severely wounded at Stono. Savannah. Sept 16-Oct 18, 1779. French-American soldiers not successful I, Henry Potter, District Judge as aforesaid, do certify that it appears to my satisfaction that the said Thomas Jinks did serve in the Revolutionary war as stated in the preceding declaration against the ___ ___, for the term of nine months, on the Contained statement and that he is in reduced circumstances & stand in need of the assistance of his country for support and I now transmit the proceedings & testimony taken __before me to the Secretary for the Department of War, pursuant to the directions of the aforementioned act of Congress. Raleigh 16th September 1818. H. Potter The within Thomas Jinks appeared again before me this 30th day of October 1823 and on oath declares that he was drafted as a soldier as stated in the within declaration and served under said Draft about three months, and was then enlisted & returned as an enlisted soldier in the company mentioned in his declaration for the term of nine months, and served out the said nine months under his said enlistment and not under the draft as stated in his declaration. Deponent saith that he either did not recollect the circumstance of his enlistment after the draft at the time he declared, or he did not consider it mattered to be mentioned. Potter 10th Regiment Abraham Shepard Colonel Thomas Jinks, Corp Quinn's Date of enlistment 1779 Discharged Dec 79 The above is a true abstract taken from the muster roll of the North Carolina Continental line in the revolutionary war. Given under my hand the 8th Sept 1818. Wm Hill, Secretary of State. State of North Carolina Chatham County August 19th 1818. This day came George Jincks before me William Avent one of the Justices of the Peace in and for the same county and state aforesaid and made oath that Thomas Jincks served nine months in the army of the United States of American on the Continental Establishment in the War of the revolution and received a discharge for the same, furthermore this deponent saith --- George X Jencks Wm Avent, JP North Carolina Chatham County This may certify that William Avent whose name is assigned to the annexed paper is an acting Justice of the peace in and for the county of Chatham and that due faith and credit is and ought to be given to his attestations as such. Witness Thomas Ragland, Clerk of the said Court and under seal & office the first day of September A.D. 1818. Thos Ragland Raleigh 10 Jan 1824 Dear Sir, At the request of this poor old man, Thomas Jinks, I have enclosed to your care, his papers. They are an application for a pension. The papers were sent on several years ago by Judge Potter but was not allowed on due to an Error in drawing his declaration. It is now amended, and it is plain to see that there was an Error, in stating of his being drafted, instead of Enlisting, by reference to the Certificate of Wm Hill, Esq herewith enclosed. He wishes you to lay them before the Secretary of War and if allowed to enclose the Certificate to me for him or if any further evidence should be required, please inform me. Jinks lives up near the Orange line [Orange County line] & wished me to apply tpo you on his behalf. And I have no doubt you would do... I am respectfully, yours, Richard Smith. State of North Carolina Wake County Court of please and quarters November Seven 1823 Personally appeared in open Court it being a court of record for the County of Wake and State aforesaid Thomas Jinks a resident citizen of said county, who being duly sworn, deposeth and said that he was a resident citizen of the United States in the 8th March 1818, and that he has not since that time by gift sale or any other way disposed of his property or any part thereof with interest thereby so to diminish it as to bring himself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled to provide certain persons engaged in the land & Naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War passed the 8th day of March 1818 nor has he or any other person in trust for him any property , money or securities of any kind other than what is contained in the Schedule hereunto annexed by him subscribed. Schedule one mare bridle & saddle valued at $35.00 one bed & furniture $12.00 one chest $1.00 One table $1.00 4 pewter plates & dish $5.00 One Hand saw & drawing knife $2.50 two bowl & a pitcher $1.00 1 plough and Gees $2.00 1 Axe and Hod $3.00 1 pot of hooks 20/ ; 1 spider 12/6 $3.25 2 Basin ?, 1 bread tray 2/6 $2.25 5 head of cattle $40; 8 hoops $16; bed & furniture $12. 1 pot $2.; a little crockery ware worth $2 which articles are given to his wife and are in her possession Total $138.00 Sworn to and subscribed in open Court by the aforesaid Thomas Jinks Thomas X Jinks (his mark) And I further certify that it is the opinion of the said Court that the value of the property contained in the above schedule is as stated amounting to $66.00. State of North Carolina. Wake County. I Benjamin S. King, clerk of the court aforesaid do hereby certify that the within affidavit & schedule are truly copies upon the records of the said court. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal of the said Court at Raleigh this 20th day of November A.D. 1823. The said Thomas Jinks further maketh oath that his family consist of himself and his wife only, and that he is very old and infirm between the age of 78 & 79 and his wife named Keziah Jinks, aged 75 years, and very infirm & old and are not able to support themselves by their labour without the assistance and charity of their neighbors and that they reside in the County of Wake and have done so for many years, say about 40 years & further sayeth not. Thoas X Jinks Swore to in open Court the date aforesaid & subscribed. B.S. King. The above deposition as to the age of said Thomas is a part of his affidavit & schedule. B.S. King that his family consists of himself wife only. Thomas Jinks age 78 or 79. Keziah Jinks his wife is 75 & no other person. State of North Carolina. Wake County. The affidavit of Seth Jinks, who being duly sworn according to Law before deposeth that he is well acquainted with the within named Thomas Jinks and well knoweth that he is the same Thomas Jinks and the identical person his pension describes himself to be. And that he also knows this Thos Jinks is a pensioner, having often seen & read the original Certificate signed by J.C, Calhoun, Esq Sec of War at that time and that he has no doubt it was burnt, as described by this said Thomas Jinks. Seth Jinks Sworn to & subscribed before me the 16th day of Jan 1833. Jno Bable Jc Wake County. The affidavit of Richard Smith who deposed & said that on the night of the 27th Sept last his Sore House & other outhouses upon his lot, was by a vile incendiary burnt up together with all his Store of goods, books notes & accts and that he ws not able to save anything in the Store. That the Original Certificate of Thomas Jinks a pensions was lodged with him, and he has no doubt it was burnt. The said Thomas Jinks he is also well acquainted with & knows him to be the identical person named in the Original Certificate from the War Department signed by J.C. Calhoun then Secretary of War. Thos Cobbs, JP Treasury Department Second Comptroller's Office July 9, 1838 Sir: Under the act of the 6th of April 1838, entitled "An act directing the transfer of money remaining unclaimed by certain pensioners and authorizing the payment of the same at the Treasury of the United States," Catharine Mills, daughter of Thomas Jinks, deceased, a pensioner on the roll of N. Carolina Agency at the rate of 8 dollars per month under the law of 18th March 1818 has been paid by this department from the 4th March 1837 to the 5th August 1837, the day of his death.
