Wake County, NC - John & Martha Williams Revolutionary War Pension, 1835 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ January 14, 1936 Margaret Williams Byron, Georgia Dear Madam: Reference is made to your letter in which you request the Revolutionary War records of John Williams, of Wake County, North Carolina, and Thomas Williams, of Currituck County, that state. Because of the great demand for Revolutionary War data, and the limited trained clerical force available for furnishing such information, it is impossible to comply in full with each request relative to soldiers of that war. The record of John Williams is furnished you herein as shown in pension claim, W.177, based upon his service in the Revolutionary War. John Williams was born in 1754 in Warren County, North Carolina; the names of his parents are not given. John Williams enlisted in Bute (which was later Warren) County, North Carolina, in the fall of 1775, served as private in Captain Gamble's Company, Colonel William Washington's Regiment of Light Dragoons, was in the battle of Savannah and in many skirmishes with the British and Tories, and was discharged in September, 1781. The soldier was allowed pension on his application executed May 20, 1833 while a resident of Wake County, North Carolina, and died there June 7 or 10, 1845. John Williams married in 1810 in Franklin County, North Carolina, Martha (or Patsey) Jones, a resident of that county, his residence than not shown. Their marriage bond dated January 6, 1815, and signed by the soldier and one Henry Baker (no relationship stated), was recorded in the County Clerk's Office in Franklin County, North Carolina. The date and place of Martha Jones' birth and names of her parents were not given. Soldier's widow, Martha Williams, was allowed pension on her application executed March 16, 1853, in Wake County, North Carolina, at which time she was aged eighty-four years. She died June 6, 1861, in said Wake County. In 1869, William Jones, aged sixty-seven years and residing at 275 South 2nd Street, Williamsburg, New York, stated that he was a son and heir of soldier's widow, Martha Williams. He did not state his father's name and no reference was made to a former marriage of Martha Williams. In 1833, one Joseph Williams was a resident of Wake County, North Carolina, and his relationship to soldier's family not shown. Yours very truly, A.D.
