The case excited great interest, the prisoner being an infirm soldier of the revolution, in the 76th year of his age, with a beard descending to his breast. He plead not guilty. It appeared in evidence that the deceased, a young man came to the premises of Ray, and threatened him and his wife with bodily harm - that Ray forbid him entering his enclosure, declaring that if he did he would shoot him - that Eason notwithstanding got on the fence with one leg over, and while in this situation the prisoner discharged a gun, and three shot entered the deceased. This occurred in October, and the deceased died in January following. It did not appear clearly, whether the old man intended to shoot the deceased, or fired his gun in that direction to frighten him. The Jury, after deliberating about two hours, returned a verdict of Manslaughter. When Ray was called up to hear the sentence of the Court, a pardon from the Governor was produced, and he was accordingly discharged.
