Wake County, NC - Ernest Haywood Kills Ludlow Skinner, 1903 ~~~~~~~~~~ Newspaper: The Observer from Raleigh February 22, 1903 E. Haywood Shoots and Kills Ludlow Skinner at Raleigh A special to the Observer from Raleigh, NC, says: At 4 o'clock this afternoon on Fayetteville Street, Ernest Haywood shot and killed Ludlow Skinner. Haywood is a grandson of the late State Treasurer John Haywood, and one of Raleigh's leading lawyers. Skinner was a grandson of the late Dr. Ludlow of New York, and a son of Rev. Dr. Skinner of Raleigh. At least a hundred persons must have seen the shooting. Skinner fell on his face on the car track not 40 yards from the court house. Haywood was taken by Deputy Sheriff Spark to Haywood's office and later taken to the court house where Magistrate Marcoma, after a preliminary hearing, committed him to jail for murder. Skinner's wife is a daughter of the late Major John Winder. The rumor is that the tragedy grew out of a reported secret marriage in the family of one of the men concerned. ______________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
