Wake County, NC - J. Melville Broughton, 1949 Washington, March 6 J. Melville Broughton, 60 year-old former Governor of North Carolina died suddenly of a heart attack Sunday barely two months after he achieved his lifelong ambition to sit in the United States Senate. Funeral services will be held in his home town, Raleigh, NC Tuesday. Broughton, a freshman Democrat, started a 6-year Senate term last Jan. 3. Previously he had been Governor of his state from 1941 to 1945 and a prominent attorney in private live. The tall, heavy-set Senator had participated briefly last week in the Southern filibuster and was preparing a longer speech in this week. He was stricken shorly before 8 a.m. and taken to the Naval Medical Center at nearby Bethesda, Md., where he died at 8:45 a.m. His wife, the former Alice Harper Willson, was at the bedside.
