Cooke, eldest son of Col. Henry Cooke. In the premature death of this truly amiable youth, society has to lament the loss of a member who bid fair for extensive usefulness - the Raleigh Academy one of its brightest ornaments, and his parents a son apparently destined to be the consolation of their declining years. It cannot fail to be a source of much satisfaction to his intimate friends to know, that during his illness and at the approach of the destined moment, he gave the most unequivical evidence of "his peace being made with his God." He died with all the fortitude and resignation which unfeigned piety as well calculated to inspire. To his afflicted parents we can only with pious Job exclaim, "The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord." May that God who hath given the stroke provide the balm! The tear of affection, gentle shade! shall oft be shed to thy memory. May thy soul rest in the bosom of thy God!
