The General had served the county first in the House of Commons and latterly in the Senate of our State Legislature for 18 successive years. It was in that character, he arrived at Raleigh on the 18th November, but taking cold on the 24th, was confined for 34 days before his death in his room. Every exertion was made by the most skillful physicians, as well as an able one from Orange, to arrest the progress of the disease; but the complaint settled upon his lungs, and was attended with unconquerable fever, which at length became extremely nervous. General Grist was esteemed for his honest integrity and independence of character as a legislator. By his death the state has lost a useful citizen; his wife and seven children an affectionate husband and tender parent; his relatives and acquaintances a sincere and active friend and hospitable neighbor. The distance of his family residence being 110 miles, MRS. GRIST and her son, who waited on him, were prevailed on to have his body interred in the burial ground of this City. His remains will be honored by all classes of our citizens this day.
