Such are our feelings while we record the death of our friend, JOHN H. JOHNSON, who fell in a charge in defense of his country on the 20th day of May, 1864, near Petersburg. He volunteered in Company D, Captain Lassiter's Company, 35th Regiment, N. C. Troops, in June, 1861, and participated in all the fights from Newbern to the fights around Richmond, where he received his death wound. He had professed religion in October, 1855, and united himself with the Baptist Church at Olive's Chapel, Wake County. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity. He was born on the 4th day of March 1840 and died the 20th day of May, 1864. While penning this notice we have heard of the death of his brother, THOMAS, who fell on the battle-field near Petersburg, on Friday the 17th of June. He possessed all the qualities of his brother, JOHN, as a soldier, a Christian, a Mason. He leaves a devoted wife and child to mourn his death. He joined the same company at the same time with his brother, and when JOHN fell on the 20th, he caught him in his arms and remained with him until driven away by the enemy. His poor brother lay on the battle-field two days. THOMAS then took his body, laid it in the grave, where it remained for a week, when his father took it up, removed it to the family graveyard, and there buried it. May the ashes of these noble young men repose in peace.
