Wayne County, NC - Obituaries - John King - 1880 File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Bob King From "The Observer", Raleigh, NC, Saturday, 21 August, 1880: "Mr. John King, a well known resident of this city, died in Asehville yesterday at 11:30 A. M., after a brief sickness. He was in charge of the work on the new Episcopal church at that place, having been awarded the contract for its construction. Mr. King was born in Scotland, but had been a resident of this city for many years. He for a long time owned a marble yard in this city, and in 1874 was placed in charge of the stone work on the post office and courthouse. Later he was appointed active superintendent of construction, and so remained until completion of the building in 1878. He was a man of much ability in his profession, and a good citizen. He was a member of the William G. Hill Lodge of Masons, and his funeral will be in charge of that order. The remains are expected to arrive in this city about noon today, and it is presumed the funeral will be held from the First Presbyterian Church. Notice of this will be given by the ringing of the bell." A follow-up item in "The Observer", Tuesday, 24 August, 1880, states "the funeral was held Sunday morning from the Second Presbyterian Church", and that "the remains were taken to Oakwood and there interred". ======================================================================= USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
