MAYNARD and BURWELL MANGUM, which resulted in the death of the latter about eight o'clock Wednesday morning. It seems there had been a previous difficulty between the parties. MANGUM went to the house of MAYNARD and, calling him by name, asked him to come out of the garden, whereupon MAYNARD came out with a hoe, with which he had been working, in his hand, and struck the deceased a very severe blow with his fist, knocking him down. After he was down MAYNARD dealt upon him many severe blows with the hoe which he held in his hand. The object of MAYNARD seems to have been to mutilate and murder the deceased on the spot, and would have succeeded but for the interference of bystanders. On the examination by the jury of inquest Wednesday morning of the body it was found to be sadly mutilated and bruised. DR. DUPREE testified that the wound on the head and those on the left breast would have caused death; but there were marks of vilence in many other parts. The verdict of the jury was that BURWELL MANGUM came to his death by blows inflicted on his head and left breast with a hoe by GREEN J. MAYNARD. The deceased leaves a widow and eleven children. MAYNARD was sent to jail by MAYOR HARRISON Tuesday night to await further process.
