S. Ruffin. Is there a heart attuned to virtuous feeling, that can with the cold rules of philosophy contemplate the chasm made in society, by the loss of those suddenly cut off in the prime of manhood? Can frail humanity gaze upon the victims of the fell monster, Death, and with stoic apathy view the wreck of human nature? No! -- Death even in it's mildest form, with the aspect of slow and lingering disease, is appalling to our feelings, but when with scarce an intimation of his purpose, he robs us of those who have just started in life, it is a calamity which sets at naught the cold dictates of reason. Not a week has elapsed since the deceased appeared in all the glow of health -- now, the cold clod of the valley rests on that bosom, that throbbed with every manly feeling. Mr. Ruffin was affable in his manners, frank and generous in his disposition, and in his friendship steadfast and firm. None was more ready that the subject of this notice, when others were sick, to sooth the fretfulness of disease and alleviate the pains of affliction, by kind attentions. None more willing to administer to the necessities of the unfortunate, than he, whose death we now lament.
