Wake County, NC - Rand Obituaries ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [No dates shown] Nathaniel M. Rand The news of the sudden death of Mr. Nathaniel M. Rand, which occured at his home, 610 Fayetteville Street Thanksgiving afternoon, came as a shock to a great host of friends in the city for Mr. Rand had long been prominent in the business life of the city and was most highly esteemed by many friends. The funeral service will be held from the residence Saturday morning at 11:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.C. Wooten, pastor of Edenton Street Methodist Church. Mr. Rand's death resulted from heart failure following a second attack of what had been considered acute indigestion. The first attack came about 9:30 o'clock. A trained nurse and a physician had given relief and no special danger was apprehended. The second attack from which he died came at 8 o'clock. Mr. Rand had seemed to be in excellent health lately, having about two years ago recovered from a period of ill health. For twenty-nine years Mr. Rand had been prominent in the business life of the city, having come to Raleigh in 1885. In 1903 he was elected a member of the board of aldermen and represented his ward for two years. He was born in Wake County about ten miles south of Raleigh, sixty-one years ago. Before coming to Raleigh he engaged in business in Selma and Smithfield. In this city he went in business with his brother, the late Mr. Dal Rand. When that partnership was dissolved in 1887 Mr. Rand entered into partnership with Mr. T.B. Crowder, under the firm name of Crowder & Rand. The marriage of Mr. Rand to Miss Selina Ballentine, daughter of Mr. J.D. Ballentine of Varina, occured in 1887. Mrs. Rand and five children survive. They are Phillip, Julian, Gordon, Virginia and Nancy Green Rand. Mr. Julian Rand is connected with the American Tobacco Company of Montreal, Canada, and will arrive for the funeral. One brother and two sisters also survive. They are: Mr. Chance Rand and Mrs. W.E. Young and Mrs. Ella Jones, all of whom reside in Wake County. Phillip Rand The funeral of Phillip B. Rand, eldest son of Mrs. N.M. Rand, will be held at the residence on Fayetteville Street, tomorrow, Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Mr. Rand, who died in Denver, Colorado last Friday, was 30 years of age. He was a graduate of Trinity College, and a member of Edenton Street Methodist Church. Besides his mother he is survived by two brothers, Julian A. and Gordon, and two sisters, Virginia and Nancy. Although he has resided in the West for a number of years in a search for health, he is remembered by many friends here who will regret to learn of his death. Services will be conducted by Rev. W.W. Peele and the following will act as pallbearers: Ralph Crowder, W.B. Duncan, Edwin Dewar, Cooper Young, Dr. B.J. Lawrence, and P.H. Ray. Dal Rand Information was received here on Monday, that Mr. G.D. Rand was stricken with paralysis at his home near Richmond, Va., and his brother, Mr. N.M. Rand and brother-in-law, Mr. C.B. Barbee, left at once for his bedside. Yesterday Mr. E.B. Barbee received a telegram announcing his death. Mr. Rand was a son of the late Major Nat Rand, one of the most prominent and influential men of his time in this county, and spent most of his life in this county of his nativity. He was at the time of his death fifty-three years of age. He married the only daughter of one of our most honored citizens, the late C.C. Barbee and leaves his wife and [missing text] Andrew, Christopher [text missing] When a mere lad Mr. Rand entered the Confederate Army and served with great gallantry until the surrender in 1865. He returned home to find the changes wrought by war and very soon came to Raleigh to live. Here he soon established a [missing text] business and by honest and upright dealing succeeded in gaining the confidence of our people. The old established house of Rand and Barbee was one of the best known and strongest in the city. In 1887 Mr. Rand moved to Richmond and there carried on business until sometime before his death.
