WILLIAM VANN SAVAGE DR. W.V. SAVAGE DIES IN CHURCHLAND; HAD LONG AND USEFUL MINISTRY Dr. W.V. Savage, one of Virginia’s leading and best-known clergymen, died at his home in Churchland, Va., Tuesday, July 28, after an illness of nearly one year’s duration. Dr. Savage was a native of Como, N.C., the son of the late Rev. R.R. Savage and Mrs. Rowena Vann Savage, both his parents being member of families long prominent in Eastern North Carolina. Graduating at Wake Forest College in 1883, he was for a time principal of an academy at Henderson, N.C., and after training for and entering the ministry, served Baptist churches at Columbia and Tarboro, N.C., before going to Churchland where he had preached for 34 years. A leader in his church in Virginia, he had been actively interested in the welfare of the Baptist Orphanage at Salem, the University of Richmond and the Virginia General Association, being a trustee of the two institutions and vice president of the Baptist Association of Virginia. He was also a member of the board of trustee of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville, Ky. Dr. Savage was well known and loved in Franklin where he was a frequent visitor, as well as in Newsoms, Boykins and other places in this county. He was one of the most effective and appealing preachers we have ever heard, and while devoted to his high calling in the ministry, maintained an active interest in public and civic affairs, in sports, and in all of those contacts which make a well-rounded man and contributed to his larger usefulness as a spiritual leader. He was married on December 18, 1888, to Miss Mattie W. Williams of Raleigh, who survived him. In addition he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. T.C. Hathaway, of Churchland; three sons, Robert R. Savage and W.V. Savage, Jr. of Churchland, and John G. Savage of Wilson, N.C.; a brother, Toy D. Savage of Norfolk, and two sisters, Mrs. J.L. Camp of Franklin and Mrs. H.T. Williams of Chase City. The funeral held in Churchland Wednesday afternoon was largely attended by friends from throughout Virginia and North Carolina, Dr. Sparks W. Melton of Norfolk conducting the service, and burial was made in the church cemetery.
