JOHN WILLIAM SMITH Dr. John W. Smith, age 73, prominent physician of Branchville and surgeon for the Seaboard R.R., for 25 years or more, until his declining health, died Sunday night at 10:30 o'clock at the hotel at Norlina, N.C., he was under the care of his nephew, Dr. Howitt Foster. His body was conveyed to Boykins Monday morning to the Purviance Funeral Home, where services were held Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.L. Carrick, assisted by Rev. Bailey Jones and Dr. R.A. Helton, pastor of the Boykins Baptist Church. During the service the Branchville Baptist Church choir sang "Safe In Arms of Jesus" and "In The Garden" Dr. Smith was the son of the late Mrs. Augusta Avery Smith and John Wm. Smith of Wake County, N.C. His first wife, the former Miss Frances Hoge, also of Wake County preceded him to his grave 16 years ago. He had lived in Florida for the past few years and with his daughters, Mrs. Arthur Green, at Ahoskie, N.C. Surviving him are two daughters, Miss Mildred Smith, of Orlando, Fla., and Mrs. Arthur Green and one granddaughter, Patricia Green, of Ahoskie; one brother, James Smith of Lawrenceville, a nephew, Dr. Howitt Foster, of Norlina, N.C. The casket was covered with a pall of white roses, lilies and orchids, with evergreens. There were many beautiful floral offerings and a large attendance of friends. Honorary pallbearers were members of Southampton Medical Society and friends of the family. Active pallbearers were: E.T. Story, A.B. Harris, Aubrey Woodard, J.M. Britt, E.W. Bryant, L.F. Draper, A.L. Knight and V.S. Pittman. Interment was made in Beechwood Cemetery at Boykins.
