ERMA REBECCA HARCUM THOMPSON

THE VIRGINIAN PILOT

   Erma Rebecca Harcum Thompson, born March 2, 1917, died Jan. 13, 2011 in 
Cary. Erma, born in Southampton County, Virginia was the daughter of James 
Dossie and Mary Tidwell Harcum. She was the widow of Willis Earl "Kirk" 
Thompson who died in 1980. She was preceded in death by her four brothers and 
sisters.

   Surviving are her son, Robert E. Thompson and wife Kathy of Ashland, Va.; 
her daughter, Rebecca T. Chapman and husband Jack of Cary. She leaves behind 
her four grandchildren, Jennifer P. Singh (Pravin), Amanda P. Bell (Tom), 
Matthew B. Thompson (Jennifer) and Christopher Y. Thompson; and four great-
grandchildren, Colton and Bryce Bell and Micah and Penelope Rebecca Signh. 
There are also several nieces and nephews. While she enjoyed attending 
Greenwood Forest Baptist Church for the past three years, Port Norfolk Baptist 
Church in Portsmouth, was her church home for more than 60 years. There she 
was a member of the Friends Bible Class, the WMU and the XYZ Senior Group. She 
was also a member of the Scottish Rites Ladies Auxillary. She was best known 
for her love of family, her quiet faith, her strong network of friends and her 
delicious country cooking. She will be dearly missed by all those who loved 
her. 

   A service of celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at the 
chapel of the Port Norfolk Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, please make 
contributions to the ongoing ministry of the Port Norfolk Baptist Church, 401
