LILION L. VAUGHAN RALEIGH, N.C. – Prof. L.L. Vaughan, 78, former director of instruction for N.C. State College School of Engineering, Raleigh, died Thursday at Rex Hospital in that city. He had visited relatives in Franklin during the weekend and had returned to Raleigh Tuesday morning. He was the son of J.B. and Mrs. Ida Rawls Vaughan of Franklin and the husband of the late Lula Brewer of Raleigh. Mr. Vaughan was a graduate of State College and died post graduate work at Columbia University. Long associated with the teaching staff of State College, he rose from instructor to professor in the School of Engineering Appointed head of Mechanical Engineering in 1920, he became acting Dean of the Engineering School in 1942. He retired in 1949. A member of many scientific, social and professional fraternities, Mr. Vaughan was listed in Who’s Who in Engineering, Who’s Who in Education, American Men of Science, and Who’s Who in America. He was special instructor for the armed forces during World War I and II. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the United Church, on the State College YMCA Board and the Board of Trustees of Elon College. Surviving are one niece, Mrs. William T. Thomas of Chesterfield, Mo.; one brother-in-law, T.W. Brewer of Raleigh and several cousins.
