Twenty nine years ago, G.W. Morris, then a handsome young man, marched away to war. He left behind a fair young girl who held his heart captive and the compact between the two was that when Morris returned from war, they were to be married. The first meeting since then was in Greensboro, Thanksgiving day, and the original contract was fulfilled last night, their marriage occuring in Raleigh. Around their lives is enough of real romance for the basis of a most entertaining Thanksgiving story. Mr. Morris did not return from the war and his affianced waited in vain for him. After a time she got news that he had been killed and mourned him as dead. Later on a sea captain, Capt. H.F. Woods won her heart and hand and they were married. They settled down in a town in eastern Virginia, but Capt. Woods again took to the sea and his wife accompanied him on his voyages, going around the world. The captain died a few years ago and his widow settled in San Diego, Cal. Circumstances at the close of the war prevented Mr. Morris from returning home or communicating with his affianced and he gradually drifted from place to place. He was married twice and has two grown daughters. Some time after the death of his second wife, Mr. Morris heard that Mrs. Hattie E. Woods, the sea captain's widow and his own first love, was living in San Diego. He opened correspondence with her. He had always lover her and found that she still loved him and it was arranged that she was to meet him in Greensboro three days ago. He was there on time, but by accidents of travel, she was delayed three days, but was cordially met there yesterday by her old lover. They took the train for Raleigh and were married there in the Baptist tabernacle. Mr. Morris is 54 years of age and is a salesman for Johnston & Barber of Raleigh. His wife is 42 years old. Mr. Morris related these facts to a reporter for The News as he and his true love were sitting side by side in the car seat.
