His domain started at the fork where Shocco Creek enters Fishing Creek, and encompased 17,878 acres between these two streams. Philip Alston bought 8,560 acres in 1763 and 1768; Solomon Alston bought 1,200 acres in 1767; Joseph John Alston bought 6,000 acres on this side of Maple Branch in 1768. The three brothers' nephews, Solomon and Joseph John Williams and Philip Kearny, purchased 8,450 acres next to their Alston uncles, 1769-1778. The founder of the intermarried families of Alston, Williams, and Kearny was John Alston who settled in Virginia before 1695. He came in 1713 to Chowan Precinct where he died in 1758. Since 1763, this parcel, known from 1778 as "The Maple Tract," has belonged solely to lineal descendants of seven of John and Mary Alston's ten children: Joseph John, Solomon, Philip, William, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Charity.
