Thurs. Nov. 24, 1859 - North Carolina Argus November 24, 1859
 -- July 4, 1836 Congress passed the first act of pension for surviving widows 
of Revolutionary soldiers. About 5,000 were admitted to the benefits of this 
act -- only 35 are now living. Of these, in North Carolina, MARTHA, widow of 
JOSHUA ELKINS of Chatham County, aged 102; ANN, widow of JAMES HUTCHINS, of 
Orange, 99; WINNIFRED, widow of WILLLIAM LANE, Davidson, 98; SUSANNAH, widow 
of WILLIAM WEST, Warren, 100. -- Fayetteville Observer
