Carteret palatine and the rest of the true & absolute Lords proprietors of Carolina. To all to whom these presents shall come Greeting in our Lord God everlasting Know ye that we the said Lords & absolute proprietors according to our Great Deed of Grant bearing date the first day of May Anno Dom 1668. Given to our County of Albemarle and in our hand & Great Seal of our Sd. Province do hereby give and grant unto William Downing a Tract of Land Containing Six hundred & Six acres lying in Chowan or precinct on the South Shore. Beginning at a Red Oak on Kendricks Creek, thence East Three hundred and twenty pole to a White oak then through the pocoson So. 15 Et. Six hundred & Forty pole to a bounded White Oak, then west 18 Dgs. So. One hundred & twenty pole along a branch to a hickory thence along the Courses of Kendrick Creek to the first Station, which Land was formerly Survey'd by Thomas Blount, and by the Said Thomas Blounts land Will & Testament given to his Son Jacob Blount, and by the Said Jacob Blount Assigned and Transferred to the Said William Downing. To have and to hold the said Land with all the rights, and previledges of Hunting Hawking Fishing & Fowling with all wood and waters & Rivers, with profits commodities and hereditaments to the Same belonging or appertaining Except the one half of all Gold and Silver mines unto him the said William Downing his Heirs and Assigns for ever; in as large and ample a manner to all intents and purposes as in by the said Deed is Granted or intended yielding and paying to us our Heirs and Assigns yearly the free Rent of One Shilling for every Fifty Acres hereby Granted to be holden of us, our Heirs and Assigns etc. provided that the said William Downing his Heirs and Assigns etc. Planted thereon within three years after the date hereof then this Patent to be void otherwise to Stand and be in full force and virtue - Given under the Seal of the Colony this the Sixth day of August 1719.
