Maarbjerg Scupppernan in North Carolina In the name of God Amen the fourteenth day of November Annoque Domini One thousand Seven hundred and Sixteen I John Tarkington of Scuppernan presinct being very Sick and weak but of perfect mind and memory, praised by Almighty God and Considering the certainty of Death and the uncertain time Thereof, do make this my last will and Testament in manner and form following. First of all I bequeath my Soul into the hands of Almighty God hopeing for pardon and remission of all my sins through the meritts and mediation of Jesus Christ my only Saviour and Redeemer. My body I committ to the Earth to be Buried in Decent manner at the direction of my Executrix hereafter named. Item. I give and bequeath unto my Loving wife Martha Tarkington the Plantation and house with the household goods and furniture wherein I now dwell and the utensils thereunto belonging during her natural life and after her decease to my Son William Tarkington and his heirs for Ever. Item. I give and bequeath to my said Son William all other my Lands and Plantations and also Two Cows & Calves one Sow Two piggs one yew one pewter dish six plates one feather Bid and furniture and my Gunn. one large pott, the ..... bole, that the mare brings ..... I now also give to my loving wife. And in Case my wife Intermarry after my decease then the above Lands and plantations, good and Chattels with their increase to be delivered to my said son William when he attains to the age of Sixteen yeares. Otherwise to continue under my said wife till the age of Eighteen. Item. I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mary Tarkington One Cow & Calve one heiffer of thre yeares old and one yew. Item. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Rebecca Tarkington two heifers of thre yeares old. Herein before given & bequeathed unto my said wife Martha Tarkington and her heirs for Ever. Item I do make and ordain Edward Phelps of Scuppernan precinct overseer of this my last will & Testament. Item. I do nominate and appoint my Loving Wife Martha Tarkington Sole Executrix of this my last will & Testament Revoking all former will or wills by me in any wise hertofore make or declared. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & Seale the day & yeare first above written.
