C. Feb. th17, 1885 Mr. Joseph Woodring. Dear brother, I seat myself to drop you a few lines to let you know that I have not forgotten you. I have been looking for you for some time but as you have not come I have concluded to write. Well I will tell you about the times hear as best I can. Times are hard and money scearce but I think we will have better times after the president takes his seat. We have had very cold weather during this winter but we have not had mutch snow til recently. We have a very fine snow now it is about 10 inches deep. As to grain it is plenty. Corn is from 50 to 60 cts per bushel wheat one dollar. Brother Rufus is still living in Tenn. I think he is broke up. Well I will tell you something about the debt that is coming to you for your part in the land. Rufus says he ought not to pay you anything as he had to take care of the old people and says it is out of date anyhow. Mr. A. G. Testor requested me to write to you about it. I don’t want Rufus to know that I wrote to you about it he would think I was a medling. I went to see Daniel last fall he was sick and sent for me, but he is well as usual now so far as I know. There has been a great deal of sickness in our section and several deaths. Uncle David Miller is dead. He died about 3 weeks ago with umonia fever. Well I will come to a close as I have nothing more to write. At present we are as well as usual. I hope this will find you well and doing well. Yours truly, W. L. Woodring Please write soon and fail not. Additional Comments: NOTES: W. L. Woodring (born 1820) is usually called Lawson. He lived in or near the Meat Camp area of Watauga County, N. C. in 1885.
