Watauga County, NC - Isaac Lane Revolutionary War Pension, 1832 ~~~~~~~~~~ October 24, 1938 Mr. Orville Hill Jerome, Arizona Dear Sir: Reference is made to your letter in which you request the records of Isaac Lane who enlisted in the month of June, 1776 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, wife, Sarah Russell, and "Colonel" Thomas Russell, the father of Sarah Russell, who married Isaac Lane. In order to identify the record of the Thomas Russell in whom you are interested, some of the following data in regard to him are essential- approximate dates of birth and death, and places of residence at enlistment and after service. The data which follow in regard to Isaac Lane were obtained from the papers on file in claims for pension and bounty land under File No. R.6137 based upon his service in the Revolutionary War. Isaac Lane was born February 14, 1760, place not stated, nor were the names of his parents given. While a resident of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, Isaac Lane enlisted sometime in June, 1778, served two months and twenty days as private in Captain Peter Perkins' Virginia Company. He moved to Washington County, North Carolina, near the mouth of Watauga River, about nine miles from the site of Jonesboro, Tennessee; he enlisted in 1779 and served fourteen days as private in Captain William Bean's North Carolina Company. He served from September 1, 1780, three months and fifteen days as lieutenant in Captains George Russell's and Thomas Jarnigin's companies, Colonel Sevier's North Carolina Regiment, and was in a battle at the head of Boyd's Creek. Isaac Lane moved from Watuaga County to Grainger County, thence to Claiborne County, and from there to McMinn County, Tennessee. He was allowed pension on his application executed September 5, 1832 at which time he was living in McMinn County, Tennessee. Isaac Lane married in the month of May, 1782, in Washington County, North Carolina, Sarah Russell. The date and place of her birth and names of her parents were not given, nor was it stated that the Captain George Russell under whom Isaac Lane served in 1780 was a relative of the said Sarah Russell. Isaac Lane died November 9, 1851 in McMinn County, Tennessee. His widow, Sarah Lane, was allowed one hundred sixty acres of bounty land on her application executed April 14, 1855 at which time she was aged about ninety-five years, and living in McMinn County, Tennessee. [Land warrant #34621 - 160 acres - Act of 1855] Reference was made to children of Isaac Lane and his wife Sarah, bue the only name designated was that of a son, Ticance C. Lane, who was living in 1844 in McMinn County, Tennessee, his age not stated. Reference was made also to one Russell Lane, but his relationship to the family was not shown. Very truly yours, A.D.
