A Birthday Celebration

   Mr. Editor:  On Wednesday last(April 19,1911)a number of relatives and 
friends assembled at the home of old Brother G. W. Norris, of New River, and 
spread a most bountiful dinner in honor of his 80th birthday, which was rather 
a surprise to him, though the aged brother seemed to enjoy the day very much.  
Owing to the heavy rain through the night quite a number were deprived of 
being present on account of high water.
   By 11 o’clock about thirty had gathered at him home and among were his only 
living sister, Mrs. Eliza Greene, who is in her 86th year, and only brother, 
Isaac Norris, who is in his 75th year-the only three living gout of a family 
of seven.
   After all present had refreshed themselves with the nice and plentiful 
dinner the aged father with his wife; his brother and his wife and only 
sister, assembled and a photograph taken of the five aged people.
   Mr. Norris has been a man of strong constitution and in his young and 
middle manhood he was very fond of hunting and following his fox dogs across 
these mountains and valleys and his son informs the writer that he is still 
able, even at his advanced age, to take his stilts and cross New river in 
pursuit of his hunting dog.  The children of Brother Norris presented him and 
their mother with a handsome pair of rocking chairs as a birthday present.
   By this time the guests began to leave for their homes, leaving the old 
people seemingly happy over their surprise party.  We with many friends, join 
in wishing for them the return of many more such happy events.
