Ralph L. Baird
   Ralph L. Baird, age 64, of Rt. 1, Sugar Grove, died Monday morning.
   He was born in Watauga County, November 8, 1914, son of the later Walter L. 
and Sallie Mast Baird.  He was a retired employee of the N.C. State Highway 
Department and a member of the Valle Crucis United Methodist Church.
   He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Clara Hayes Baird, two sons, W. L. Baird 
of Charlotte and Kenneth E. Baird of Valdosta, Ga.; two daughters, Mrs. Sue 
Jones of Boone and Mrs. Mary Cornett of Lenoir; six grandchildren, Teresa and 
Jonahtan Baird, Christopher and Kimberly Jones, Melissa Eller and Timothy 
Cornett.  He is also survived by two sister-in-law.
   Services were conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Hampton Funeral Home 
Chapel.  Officiating were the Rev. Carl Wilson, the Rev. Arnt Greer and the 
Rev. Richard Baird.  Burial followed in the Baird Cemetery at Valle Crucis.
   Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Dr. J. B. Hagaman Jr. 
Coronary Care Unit of the Watauga county Hospital or the Cancer Fund.
   Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangemets.
