WATAUGA COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Mary Alice Nichols, 23 Mar 2004 ----¤¤¤---- SHELBYVILLE, N.C. -- Mrs. Mary Alice Nichols, 77, of Shelbyville, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville after a brief illness. A native of Boone, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Walter L. and Hazel Wilcox Cooke. She was an active member of and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Shelbyville. She was a member of the Shelbyville Women's Club and the Volunteer Garden Club. A former special education teacher in the Bedford County School System, Mrs. Nichols received her undergraduate degree from Howard University and her master's degree from the University of Alabama. She was an accomplished pianist and artist and donated many volunteer hours to the Shelbyville Kiwanis Club and the Multicounty Cancer Network. She was the beloved wife of Mack Nichols Jr. of Shelbyville and the cherished mother of Nancy Nichols Alexander and the late James Nichols. She was a devoted grandmother who was loved and adored by her two grandchildren, William and Mary McClain Alexander. She is survived by her husband of 56+ years, Mack Nichols Jr. of Shelbyville; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Brent Alexander of Knoxville; sister, Lucille Scott of Elizabethton; brother, Mack Cooke of Elizabethton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Carole Cooke, Jenny Cooke, Nancy Cooke and Lucille Triplett; two grandchildren, William and Nancy McClain Alexander. She was preceded in death by her son, James Nichols, in 1979; brothers, Mike and "Doc" Cooke; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill Scott, Bynum Triplett, Margie and Graham Petrey, and Hilda and Selba Campbell. After receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel, Mrs. Nichols will be returned to Elizabethton for a graveside service at 12 noon at Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev.
