Born in Watauga County March 9, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Olen and Emma Rogers Winebarger. Mrs. Proffitt was a homemaker and a member of Blackburn Memorial Tabernacle. Survivors include one daughter, Dian Ray and husband, Jerry, of Winston-Salem; one son, Bill Proffitt and wife, Rosalea, of Johnson City, Tenn.; one granddaughter, Candace Ray of Winston-Salem; three grandsons, Jon Ray of Winston-Salem, Patrick Proffitt and William Proffitt, both of Johnson City, Tenn.; one great-grandson, Josh Proffitt of Johnson City, Tenn.; and one brother, Rev. Woodrow Winebarger of Boone. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Arlie Baxter Proffitt. Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Dr. Dean H. Simpson. Entombment will follow at the Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 1 until 2 o’clock at the funeral home one hour prior to the services. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Blackburn Memorial Tabernacle, care of Lisa Hahn, Fleetwood, N.C. The family would like to thank her caregiver, Edith Worley, and the kind nursing staff at Watauga Medical Center.
