A grandson, James Yates, had come home from work and found the body. Members of the family said Stanberry had been in declining health for some time and extremely depressed over the recent death of a daughter. Watauga County coroner, Barney S. Hampton ruled the death a suicide. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Flossie Mae Stanberry; three brothers, Claude Stanberry of Santa Rosa, Tex., Luther Stanberry of Deep River, Wash.; and George Stanberry of Indiana; and a sister, Mrs. Mary Cornell of Malta, Mont. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Union Baptist church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
