Wayne County, NC - Miscellaneous File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Lori Price Cobb . William & Emmet Robinson Collection Johnston County Heritage Center Reference Box, P.C.1.1. George Ragsdale Collection In Memoriam Died - In Goldsboro, a few minutes after 8 o'clock on Saturday evening, the 23rd inst., Dr. John Wendal Davis, in the 44th year of his age. Dr. Davis was born in Lenoir county, on the 8th day of August, 1825, graduated at the University of Pennsylvania, in 1847, and immediately thereafter entered on the practice of his profession in Goldsboro. It needs not the pen of friendship to tell how rapidly he rose in popularity and esteem, both in town and country. How well he retained them is sadly attested by as many sorrowing hearts as often lament the death of departed worth. As a Physician, he stood at the head of his profession. As a gentleman, in all the relations of citizens, he was above reproach. In the softer relations of son, brother and husband, his affections were as warm and tender as those of woman. He was eminently distinguished for true courage, exquisite probily, unwavering uprightness, uncompromising principles and unsullied patriotism. His death, though sudden, at the time, was not altogether looked for. The death was as calm and tranquil as his life had been honorable and useful. To the last moment, he retained perfect consciousness and expired as one falling to sleep. He leaves a wife, on the sanctity of whose sorrow let no pen intrude, by attempting to describe her irreparable loss or the depth of her anguish. Her only consolation is in the hope of his glorious resurrection through Christ, his Savior, whom her lamented husband had put on by baptism in the bosom of the Episopal Church. On Monday evening, the 25 inst, all that was mortal of the dear, lamented dead was deposited in the grave, with the customary Masonic honors, the beautiful funeral service of the Episcopal church having been previously performed by Rev Mr Stickney. It was indead a solemn and imp_____ occasion, as never before, in Goldsboro was witnessed such a universal expression of sorrow for the dead and sympathy for those most immediately affected by that sad event. Long, long will his memory live in the hearts of all who knew him, while hundreds of sorrowing hearts are feeling "we shall never see his like again." May he rest in peace. _________________________________________________________________________ USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
