                                          Fort Macon June 28th 1861

Dear Sir,
         I enclose you my resignation which you will oblige me by
presenting, in cas I am not appointed to some position more in 
accordance with my military knowledge & ability.  I have been 
promised time & again that I should have that position.  They have
made appointments time & again; men have been promoted to high
positions that had neither practice nor theory in military matters
and who came in at the eleventh hour.  I was first to draw my sword
in N Carolina & I can get any kind of letters from the best military
Generals under whom I have served as to my capacity & integrity in
military science as a commander - why is it that I am overlooked - 
the Gov. has recommended patience, that I should be placed in a 
proper position - I have been patient.  I have submitted to be
ruled & insulted even by those that knew nothing in regard to their
military duties & in all human probability never will.  Why were
such men placed over me?
          My situation is imbearable, it is not position so much
that I seek, but to avoid being ordered by these that know what
military discipline is.
          If my native State requires not my services - I know where
they will be properly appreciated & there I shall see preferment.
          There is but one appointment in the arm of the service that 
I prefer & that is Lieut Col of Artillary, if they think proper to 
make this appointment well & good - but do not press it - I can do 
better elswhere.

Sir, 
    Having recd and accepted the appointment of Capt of Artillery 
& Engineers, I respectfully withdraw my acceptance - not having
been yet commissioned in that corps.

    The commission that I hold as Capt of Artillery, in the volunteer
corps, I most respectfully resign.
