Wayne County, NC - Collections William & Emmet Robinson Collection Johnston County Heritage Center Reference Box, P.C.1.1. George Ragsdale Collection Chapel Hill Aug 15th 1855 My Dear Pa In your letter last, you told me to write you, what studies we are occupied with; therefore, having some spare time, I will do it, as correctly as I can from recollection alone. I will begin with Sunday. I suppose you know that we have to attend prayer in the chapil every morning, at 5 Oclock, and every evening (except Saturday) at 6 Oclock. Well, we atten(d) prayers, on Sunday, at 5 oclock again, at 11 we attend church at Chapil and at 5 oclock in the evening. We say a bible lesson of 2 chapters. On Monday at 11 we recite Anabasis and greek grammar, and again at 5 P.M. on Tuesday, We recite at 6 1/2 A.M. 8 pages in Boseson's greek and Roman Antiquities and also another 8 pages at 11 A.M. making 16 pages in all, again a 5 P.M. We say a page in Anabasis. On Wednesday at 6 1/2 A.M. we say another page in Anabasis, at 11 50 lines of Virgil's Georges and Latin Grammer and another lesson in the same Books a(t) 5 P.M. On Thursday we say Georges at 6 1/2 & 11 A.M. and at 5 P.M. the Science of Form. On Friday at 6 1/2 we have another lesson, in Science of form and at 11 & 5 Algebra. I think that the above is correct but am not certain not having the order at hand. So you can tell whether it requires diligence and app____tion to make honorable stand in one's class. As to the class I can't foretell my standing, but I think that I can take honors in my division there are only three that I need care much about and they are names (Swindel, Sillers, and Stockton) I am getting along better and better every day but the(y) ask so many questions not at all relating to the lesson, that I don't know what to learn, to keep up with them. However I get along pretty fairly. I don't think that I possible can do with $125 this session because The Society is very expensive and I have got me several things since so that I don't think that I will have enough to pay expenses. However, I will soon find out what the Society expenses are and then I will let you know. Don't send me any till I ask you for it and I assure you that it will only be in the last extremity. Mind I don't say I can't do with that sum but that I only think so. It is against the law of the Society to tell what their expenses are so that I must wait till I join to let you know what they are. I remain forever your affectionate Son J. H.
