Wayne County, NC - Miscellaneous William & Emmet Robinson Collection Johnston County Heritage Center Reference Box, P.C.1.1. George Ragsdale Collection Chapil Hill Aug 24th 1855 My Dear Pa Again I send you my weekly communications, and with it my warmest love for the family. It is getting rather cool up here, in the mornings, and thick clothes dont feel so very bad. I hope you are all in good health, and that the Know Nothings are entirely annihilate in the City of Kinston, although I don't think the "Yankees" will abandon their idolyed Same, if they do, it will only be as a last extremity. The "Critters" or "Sons of the Sires" or "Hindoos" or any other name they like to be called by (except that of Honest men) are pretty thick up here on the Hill, and I believe about 2/3 of the Students are Know Nothings. My "chum" is a democrat "died in the wool", but I hardly ever hear any arguing about politics. I haven't told you about finding in the room next to ours, an old rival of Wm George's. He tried to get the appointment, but found himself mistaken. His name is Thos Thomas, and he has no friendly feelings for Col. Ruffin, I can assure you; fool and blackguard are common terms for speaking of our noble Representative, but I shut him up pretty soon by telling him that he is a dissapointed Officer seeker. We had a falling out the other week, and a few blows were passed, but no harm done; we made it up soon after, for I can handle as easily as I please; he is a thin sickly fellow and weighs about 120 pounds but he is not by any means strong. I can nearly tie him, he was very much surprised when he found himself in the far corner of the room, and seemed much chagrined; the provocation came from him, and I would have been a craven in my own estimation not to have resented it. I pick no quarrels, nor intend to, but the "trodden worn will turn". Don't sell the mules, if you please, unless the(y) are to expensive; somehow I love the little fellows, and hate the thought of parting with them. I must go to recitation, So Farewell until next week and you will again hear from Your Son James _________________________________________________________________________ USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
