Dear Sir:                                         21 Dec. 1857

        I have concluded to hastily write you a few lines about matters
and things here.  We are progressing very well thus far, though I think
from the signs of the times we are to have an exciting review.  Douglas
defection has fallen far short of creating the confusion and excitement
that he had expected and the sanguine is he seems somewhat ---- fallen.
No one can now tell what is to be the upshot of the Kansas business.
As you are aware, the people of Kansas now this day on the Lecompton
Constitution.  I fear that in this area we are to have trouble in the
matter.  The Northern Democrats will generally stand firm, though some
of them will probably fail to come up when the hour of crisis arrives.
We do not know yet what Mr. Buchanan is to do for North Carolina in the
matter of appointments, he is to inform us shortly.  We have several
applicants for places.  I have been placed by the Speaker on two
important committees -- "Public Lands" and "Accounts", and shall have
to do much work this present session.

I see Leak has come out as an Independent Candidate for Governor.  I
think Holden leads in the best standards as this subject contains as 
much genuine _______ as anything I ever read.  I am rather inclined
to think that the Lanes in our state will break down before the election
comes on.
