Loftin - Ila Croom Major Loftin was born on 4 Dec 1838 in Wayne County, NC, the son of Samuel and Emily Loftin. From his CSA records at the National Archives, we learn that he was a Doctor and attained the rank of Major. I. C. M. Loftin enlisted as a Private on 27 Apr 1861 at age 22 for one year. Enlisted in Captain Claudius B. Denson's Company (Confederate Grays) 10th Regiment N. C. Infantry (Vols). Designation of Regiment changed to 20th Regiment NC Infantry (State Troops) 14 Nov 1861. He was born in Wayne Co, NC and occupation was listed as medical student, 5'11", dark hair, dark complexion, gray eyes. He was discharged 10 Jun 1862 for disability at Fort Johnson. Upon discharge gave residence at Mount Olive, NC. There is a voucher dated 31 May 1862 to him for services performed as ordered by Surgeon B. F. Cogg. On 11 Apr and 21 April 1863, paid for supplies. He was at Mount Olive, NC on 30 May 1863. On 22 February 1864, he enlisted at Kinston for a period of 3 years in Company I, 62 Regiment, Georgia Calvary. Transferred to Fort Caswell, NC, approved 7 Apr 1864. On 11 Jul 1864, he appears on rolls of CO I, Eighth Regiment, Georgia Calvary. He was paroled and pardoned at Greensboro, NC, 28 Apr 1865. Was in Captain Mosely Battery of Sampson County, Palmer's Batallion, NC Troop Light Infantry. The Wilmington Journal, Wilmington, NC, of Friday, May 31, 1867 states - Married - At the residence of the bride's father, on the 30th ult., by the Rev. B. B. Culbreth, Dr. I. C. M. Loftin to Miss Lizzie, daughter of Edward Pearsall, all of Duplin. Annie Elizabeth Pearsall was the daughter of Edward Pearsall and Margaret Powell McGowan of Duplin Co, NC. Dr. Loftin died at Rocky Point, Pender Co, NC on August 13, 1900. An edition of The Wilmington Star, August 14, 1900, Wilmington, NC reflects: Died - After a lingering and painful illness with cancer of the face, Dr. I. C. M. Loftin died yesterday at noon at his home at Rocky Point, Pender County. A dog bit Dr. Loftin in the face when he was a boy, and the wound never healed entirely at anytime. Several years ago it developed into a cancer, and his sufferings were great but were borne with patience and fortitude. For three years his sufferings have been intense and many times he was at point of death, rallying occasionally but without hope of recovery. Dr. Loftin was born in Wayne county and was 64 years of age. He graduated at Philadelphia and located at Kenansville, Duplin county, where he practiced his profession many years. Thirty-three years ago he married Miss Elizabeth Pearsall, of Kenansville, and through his long years of suffering her dovotion to her husband has been beautiful. She was ever at his side to confort and nurse him, and was faithful until death. She survives him with seven children - Mr. J. C. Loftin and Mr. J. M. Loftin, of Wilmington, Mr. S. E. Loftin and Mr. J. P. Loftin, Mrs. David Rountree and Misses Bessie and Minne Loftin, of Rocky Point. He has a brother and sister living, Dr. P. B. Loftin, of Beaufort, N. C. and Mrs. O. E. Hines, of Dudley, N. C. During the civil war Dr. Loftin entered the confederate service and for some time did duty at Fort Fisher near this city. Later he joined the cavalry service in which he remained till the close of the war. He was a member of St. John's Lodge No. 1, Masons, and for many years has been a member of the Presbyterian church. He was a good man and a most excellent citizen. The funeral will take place this morning at Pike Presbyterian church, Pender county. His sons here went up last evening to attend the obsequies. Annie Elizabeth Pearsall Loftin was born 2 Aug 1846 in Duplin County, NC. From the Wilmington Dispatch of November 13, 1918. Died - Friends will be grieved to learn of the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Loftin, which occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Thomas R. Ames, at Delgado, shortly before noon yesterday. Mrs. Loftin was in the 72nd year of her age and had been ill many weeks. The funeral serivce will be conducted at 2 o'clock this afternoon and interment made in the family graveyard at Pike Creek. Surviving the deceased at two daughters, Mrs. Ames and Mrs. J. E. Johnson, of Fair Bluff; three sons, I. C. and A. E. Loftin of this city; and J. P. Loftin, of Whitaker. She is also survived by two brothers, J. F. Pearsall, of Roanoke, Va., and B. F. Pearsall of Kenansville, and two grandaughters, one of whom is Mrs. Claude L. Pridgen.
