He married Susannah Yeates the daughter of William of Bertie County, NC. William Yeates left a will in Bertie County written December 3, 1751 in which he named one of his daughters as Susanah Pipkin. Their children were: Willis born c 1747; married Sylvia Rhodes; 2nd Mrs. Edith Beard Elisha born prior 1751; married Susannah (Hannnah) Cogdell d/o George Cogdell Mildred married David Jernigan Susannah married John Everett Beck, Sr. Nancy married William Rhodes Jr., brother of Sylvia Mary married Thomas Craddock Unknown daughter married Lewis McCullen ----- Joseph did not receive any land from his father's will, but was provided a riding horse, a Negro boy and a part of the family plantation should his younger brother Phillip die before coming of age. It is probable Joseph was already married for he did not receive any household goods either. It is not known when Joseph left Chowan County. The Dobbs County, NC Grantor-Grantee Index 1746-1750 has Joseph selling land to his son Willis and buying land from William Bush. The list of Justices and Militia Officers, 1754-1770 at the NC Archives lists Joseph Pipkin as Justice of the Peace in Bladen County in 1759 and as Justice of the Peace in Dobbs County in 1761. The 1769 Dobbs County Tax List has Joseph and sons Elisha and Willis as taxables, making them at least 18 years of age, thus born before 1752. October 27, 1773. A panel of Grand Jurors summoned to attend the Court of Oyer and Terminer, and General Goal Delivery to be held at Kingston: #9 Joseph Pipkin. Colonial Records, Dobbs County, NC. At a Council held at New Bern 12th August 1774. Ordered a new Commission of the Peace issue for Dobbs County and that Thomas Edwards, Stephen Blackman, Benjamin Caswell and William Hooker be omitted, and Benjamin Shepard and Joseph Pipkin be added to the Commission. Colonial Records. Joseph was named Justice of the Peace for Dobbs County by Act of Assembly in 1776 and again in 1778 (NC State Records, Vol. 23, pg 993 and Vol. 9, pg 1028). That part of Dobbs County in which he was living was formed from Wayne County in 1779. The men named in the act as Court House Commissioners failed to serve and Joseph Pipkin, Stephen Cobb and Needham Whitfield were named Commissioners in 1782 (NC Records Vol. 24, pg 465) and were serving in 1784 when Dr. Andrew Bass gave three acres for the erection of a public building. The North Carolina Revolutionary Army Accounts, Vol. 1, pg 33, Folio 2, show that Joseph Pipkin was paid 9 pounds and 4 pence on October 23, 1783. Whether this was for service or for goods is not known. He did not apply for a pension for any war service. In 1783 he would have been around 60 years old. The land records of Johnston, Dobbs and Wayne counties record many transactions where he was a principal. He willed over 2,180 acres to his sons and had given one daughter at least 360 acres at the time of his death. ----- NC Archives In the name of God, Amen, I, Joseph Pipkin, of the State of North Carolina and County of Wayne, being of a sound perfect mind and memory, thanks be given to Almighty God for the same, but calling to mind the mortality of my body knowing it is appointed for all mankind to die, do constitute, make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in the following manner: Principally and first of all, I give and commend my soul into the hands of God that gave it me, my body, I recommend to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named but as concerning such worldly estate as it hath been pleased God of his mercy to bless me within this life I do give and dispose of the same in the following manner: First, my wish and desire is that all my just debts and funeral charges be cleared and discharged and after that my will and desire is that my wife, Susanna Pipkin shall have four negroes, to wit, Nero, Dinah ___ and Priscillah Galloway during her natural life and after decease, my will and desire is that Nero and Galloway be given to my son, Elisha Pipkin, his heirs and assigns forever. I likewise give and bequeath to my beloved wife one bay horse, three feather beds and furniture and likewise, one desk and all the rest of my household furniture to be at her own disposal. Item I do give and bequeath to my son, Willis Pipkin, two negroes after my wife's decease, by the names of Dinah and Priscillah and also two others by the names of Cesar J Limback and young Rose and also five hundred acres of land lying on the north side of Falling Creek and both sides of Kelly's Branch and likewise three hundred acres more lying and being in the County aforesaid joining the above mentioned and also another tract of six hundred and forty acres on the north side of the upper branch of Falling Creek and likewise eighty acres more by the name of Rainsey's Place to him and his heirs forever. Item I do give and bequeath to my son Elisha Pipkin, The Manor Plantation where now I dwell containing two hundred acres, also twenty acres more adjoining the Plantation purchased from James Rhodes and likewise two hundred acres more joining the Plantation patented by myself and also two hundred fifty nine acres more joining the above mentioned patented by myself and likewise one hundred and ten acres of land joining William Rhodes lines and likewise three hundred acres joining his own lines. I also give to him my said son, one negro man named Old Ben and his wife named Viny and her increase to him and his heirs forever. And likewise a negro man called Jack and his wife named Rose, a negro girl named Dinah and a negro boy named Simon to him and his heirs forever. Item I do give and bequeath to my daughter, Mildred Jernigan, three negroes to wit, Tom, and Philip and one negro girl by the name of Betsy, to her and heirs forever. Item I do give and bequeath to my daughter, Mary Craddick one negro boy named Bussel to her and her heirs forever. Item I do give and bequeath to my daughter, Susanna Beck, three negroes, Viz Phillis, Saxoney, Jude, and likewise another negro girl by the name of Olive, to her and her heirs forever. Item I do give and bequeath to my daughter, Nancy Rhodes, one negro girl names Vinah to her and her heirs forever, and one negro woman by the name of Doll, and one negro girl by the name of Penny and all the increase belonging to Doll for her and her heirs forever. I likewise leave to my son, Elisha Pipkin, a tract of land containing one hundred and seventy acres joining his own lines and also one hundred and fifty acres more known by the name of Kellys Place. Item I do give and bequeath to my son-in-law, Lewis McCullen the sum of five pounds species to be raised out of my estate. I likewise leave to my daughter, Mary Craddick, a negro woman named Ester and her increase and all the rest of my estate that I haven't yet mentioned my desire is that my Executors here after named, put the same into lots and my children to draw from them, I likewise appoint my son, Elisha Pipkin, my son-in-law, David Jernigan and my son-in-law, John Beck, Executors to this my last Will and Testament and I do hereby utterly revoke, disannul and make void all and any other former Will or Wills here-to-fore by me made, Ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and testament. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and fast my Seal this 19th day of January in the thirteenth year of American Independency and in the year of Our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and Eight Nine (1789). The last will and testament of Joseph Pipkin late of Wayne County deceased was proved in open Court by the oath of William Bizzell a subscribing witness thereto. John Beck and Elisha Pipkin executors mentioned in the said will came into Court and qualified agreeable to Law ordered that the same be recorded and that letters Testamentary issue accordingly.
