Number 83 William Whitfield, III, b. 1743, d. 1817. Married (1) in 1763, Hester Williams, (2) Mrs. Sarah Hurst, (3) in 1792, Hepsebah Hatch, (4) Sarah Bryan. He was father of 29 children, 21 reached maturity. His eldest son William had raised a family before his youngest son, William Alexander, was born him by his fourth wife. This William died in 19O4, which was 161 years after the birth of his father. William III, and his brother Needham, served in the Revolution and helped destroy the Tories in the battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge on 27 Feb., 1776. In 1787 William III, together with his eldest son and Joseph Green, were appointed Directors and Trustees for designing and the building the town of Waynesborough, now Goldsboro.
