Sketch of the Establishment and Organization of the Everettsville Presbyterian Church In Nov. 1848 the Rev’ Andrew McMillan of the Fayetteville Presbytery visited Everettsville and the adjacent country as a Missionary, he finding some 2 or 3 members of the Presbyterian Church in the Village. At their urgent request united to the desire of friends who are favorably disposed to our church he was indeed to remain and continue his labors by preaching in alternate Sabbaths in Everettsville and Goldsboro. Rev’ Mr. Stedman of Wilmington N. C. at this time also frequently visits the place and gave Mr. McMillan very efficient aid both by faithful preaching and wise counsel. The great Head of the church was graciously pleased to bless their labors. Souls were converted, Saints were edified, the doctrines and palety of our church were explained, and the way prepared for the organization of a church. Accordingly at the Spring Meeting of Fayetteville Presbytery a resolution was passed and a committee appointed to engage a church if the way should be clear. On the 29th of Sept. 1849 Rev’ Mr. Stedman and Rev’ H. McAlister with Mr. McMillan met at Everettsville for the purpose of carrying out the resolution of Presbytery. After a sermon appropriate to the occasion by Mr. McAlister and an invitation was given to all who wished to unite themselves to the visible Church of Christ to come forward and be enrolled as members, the following persons came forward and were admitted as members of the Everettsville Church, to wit: E. Murray, Miss Mary B. Snyder, James McDuffie, Mrs. Rachel S. West, and Miss Elizabeth Sherbrook. Not being yet prepared for a full organization by the election and ordination of Ruling Elders and Deacons, this duty was deferred until the following spring. On the 17th March 1850 Mr. John Everitt and Mr. E. Murray were ordained as Elders and Mr. Willis Hall was appointed Deacon. Thus did it please God to plant and water this little vine, and to His great Name; The Lord Jesus Christ be all the praise. Up to this time there was no House of worship. The members now thought it the proper season to make an effort to erect one and although their members were few yet growing strong in faith they went on resolutely to execute their purpose. By their own efforts and the aid of a few Christian friends abroad, they were enabled to erect a very neat and commodious building at a cost of $1826. The House was dedicated in Sept 1850. Rev’ Mr. McMillan remained as stated supply to the church, faithfully and earnestly laboring as a pious and Godly minister of the New Testament until the 1st January 1851 when he was sent to the State of Alabama. He was succeeded by Rev’ J. Jarvis Smyth from East Hanover Presbytery of Va. who was appointed as Principal of the Female Academy at this time. It is right to mention here with gratitude the kindness of the ladies of Wilmington Presbyterian Church besides other marks of kindness presented to the church a very neat and elegant Pulpit Bible.
