The First United Methodist Church
Mount Olive, North Carolina

A Centennial History (1870-1970)

From 1773 to 1837 North Carolina Methodists were included in a Conference composed of South Carolina, 
Virginia, and Holston. In 1828 the Methodist Protestants withdrew and in 1837 at Petersburg, Virginia, 
North Carolina was set off as a separate Conference. As such, the first North Carolina Annual Conference 
of the Methodist Episcopal Church was held in Greensboro in 1838. In 1844 The Methodist Church split 
into the Methodist Episcopal Church, South and The Methodist Episcopal Church, North.

Methodist churches were organized in Wayne County and the Goldsboro Circuit was founded by the N. C. 
Annual Conference in 1853 and continued until 1856. At that time Goldsboro was made a station and the 
circuit became known as Everettsvile. It was during the latter years of the Everettsville Circuit that 
the Mount Olive Congregation organized its church.

A paper which Mrs. Elizabeth McGee Breazeale prepared for the opening service of our present church in 
1913 is so beautifully written that it seems appropriate to include it in its entirety. On June 8, 1913, 
the following paper was read by Mrs. Breazeale:

"Prior to the organization our people had worshiped at what is now a deserted village, Everettsville, 
in those days a center of culture, wealth, and a refined religious atmosphere. When on April 12, 1873, 
at a Quarterly Conference this appointment was discontinued, the old church was at once moved over the 
sand hills to Mount Olive."
