Bond Dec 8 1858 North Carolina Know all men by these presents that we John C Slocumb, Richard Washington and John Wright are held and firly bound unto the State of North Carolina in the sum of twenty five thousand dollars which payment well and truly be made we bind ourselves our heirs executors & administrators jointly & severally firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals and dated the 8th day of December AD 1858. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bounden John C Slocumb has this day made application for letters of a special administration upon the estate of Joel D Battle dec'd. Now therefore if the said John C Slocumb shall well and truly administer all and singular the goods and chattels rights and credits of the said Joel D Battle untill the next ensuing county court of Wayne County & shall then well and truly pay over and deliver said estate to such person or persons as said court may appoint administrator upon said estate, then the above obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force & virtue. Signed Sealed & delivered John C Slocumb in presents of Jno Wright Jno H Powell Rich'd Washington ----- State of North Carolina Wayne County County Court Clerks office Dec 8 1858 At a called court begun & held this day in the county court clerks office present, Geo W Collier, Jno B Griswold, Wm C Bryan Justices of the county aforesaid and it appearing to the satisfaction of the said Justices that Joel D Battle of said county has recently died intestate and that his estate is in such a situation as to require the immediate case of some discreet person. Special letters of administration are therefore granted to John C Slocumb upon the estate of the said Joel D Battle who enters into bond in the sum of twenty five thousand dollars with Richard Washington and John Wright Sureties and the said John C Slocumb administrator as aforesaid is hereby impowered to collect and take into his possession the estate of said deceased untill the next court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions of said county to be held for the county aforesaid on the 3rd Monday in February next and the said John C Slocumb administrator as aforesaid is authorised to expose to public sale after giving ten days notice at three or more public places in said county on a credit of six months the following property of the intestate Viz lot of merchandise &c. W C Bryan G W Collier Jno B Griswold ----- Notice The subscribers having at the Feb term of Wayne County taken letters of administration according to law on the estate of Dr. Joel D Battle dec'd hereby gives general notice to all creditors of sd estate to present their claims duly authenticated within the time limited by law otherwise this notice will be plead in bar of recovery. Debtors to sd estate will also please make immediate payment. Feb 24th 1859 J. C. Slocumb Adm State of North Carolina Wayne County J. P. Collier maketh oath that he saw a copy of the within notice posted up at the court house door in Goldsboro on or about the 25th day of Feb 1859 and at the store of J. E. Whitfield in Everittsville, the store of J. B. Griswold in Dudley about the last of Feb & also at the Post office in Goldsboro about the same time. Jno. P. May Co 1859 ----- Note of W J Futril, $150, August 16th 1859 Rec'd of the within note On the first day of January eighteen hundred & fifty six we or either of us promise to pay Dr J D Battle or order the just and lawful sum of one hundred & fifty dollars for the hire of negro man Caesar and we also promise to furnish said negro three good & sufficient suits of clothes one to be a wollen hat, blanket & shoes.
