Wayne County, NC - County Jail Inmates, 1877 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Goldsboro Messenger April 23, 1877 Our county jail has for several weeks been filled to its utmost capacity at an expense of nearly $10 per day to the taxpayers. On Saturday Jailor Thompson's roll call numbered twenty-nine inmates, of which the following is the muster roll: Lewis Hackaday, larceny Bernard Angeline, (italian) larceny Caesar Whitfield, larceny George Holland, burglary Larry Parks, larceny Joe Brown, horse stealing Diter Darden, burglary Handy Atkinson, larceny James Jones, larceny Sam. Oliver, larceny Tom. Ditson, larceny Eli. Oliver, larceny John Moses, larceny Moses Mitchell, larceny George Atkinson, attempt to rape Jack Thompson, burglary Willis Wooten, larceny Henry Anderson, larceny Wm. Joyce, (white) assault Sol. Warren, assault Joseph Cox, assault Thos. Sherard, larceny Robert Sherard, larceny Mack Lanier, larceny Joseph Flowers, larceny Wm. Palmer, (white) for cost Celie Hood, larceny Doc Best, larceny and murder Albert Jones, misdemeanor This number will in all probability be increased during the present week. We trust, however, that the present term of Court will releave the county of the expense of feeding them. There is fair prospect that perhaps a dozen or more will be transferred to the Penitentiary ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
