A sworn jury would visit the deceased to make a determination as to the cause of death and report same to coroner. Jurors consisted of six to seven men. These visits could be in a home, by the river, the railroad tracks or in the woods. A court document was prepared for each individual providing all the details and signed by the jurors. The NC Archives has inquest documents for Wayne County in the years 1790, 1794- 1795, and 1812-1898.
