These are inquests held by a coroner to determine the cause of violent, 
sudden, or mysterious deaths. A sworn jury would visit the deceased to make a 
determination as to the cause of death and report same to coroner. Jurors 
consisted of six to seven men. These visits could be in a home, by the river, 
the railroad tracks or in the woods. 

A court document was prepared for each individual providing all the details 
and signed by the jurors.

The NC Archives has inquest documents for Wayne County in the years 1790, 1794-
1795, and 1812-1898. The following are deceased persons and determinations of 
death:

Nov 1790 - George Langston - falling or slipping accidentaly into the 
river drowning

Feb 1794 - George Brabury - hung himself from a tree

Dec 1794 - Benjamin Walden - accidental drowning

Nov 1795 - John Tiner - accidental death

May 1811 - Robert Peele - act of God

Feb 1813 - Exum Hollowell - either by sudden visitation from the Almighty 
in a natural way or a fall from his horse

May 1813 - Isaac Bizzell - hanged himself

Oct 1813 - Fredarck E Becton - hanged himself with rope

Feb 1827 - Elizabeth Williams - drowned in Neuse River

Sep 1827 - Negro Bryan - drowned

Oct 1827 - Elizabeth Williams, wife of Levi Williams - suicide

Nov 1829 - Lewis Freeman - accidental drowning

Jul 1830 - John Powell - shot and killed by Lewis Edwards

Jul 1830 - David Anderson - hanged by his suspenders

May 1835 - Willis Hines - accidental drowning

May 1836 - Nathan Perkins - accidental drowning

Nov 1836 - Shadrick Daniel - hit on head with a piece of timber by 
Etheldred Howell

Dec 1836 - Joseph Benton - freezing

Dec 1836 - Benjamin Rodgers - freezing

Jan 1837 - Edward Mozingo - freezing

Apr 1837 - Shadrick Thompson - accidental drowning

Apr 1839 - Joseph Enos, late of New Hanover - jumping or accidentally 
falling from the tinder of a locomotive

Apr 1845 - Wiley Garris - suicide

Feb 1846 - Mary Hedgepeth - caught under a falling tree

Mar 1846 - Arthur Sasser - falling limb from tree

Aug 1847 - Rufus A Harrison - suicide

Nov 1847 - Charles West - visitation of God

Jan 1848 - Jeremiah Capps - falling limb from tree

Mar 1848 - Coley Herring - visitation of God

Aug 1849 - Slave Reuben - two blows to head with axe

Jan 1850 - Robert L Jones - suicide by taking Laudanum (opium)

Feb 1850 - Edmon Cox - hanged himself
 
Feb 1850 - Zella Jones - visitation of God

Mar 1850 - Burwell Hamm - fell from horse or horse ran him against a tree

Aug 1850 - Ephriam Barden - excessive drinking of ardent spirits

Apr 1855 - Nancy Jones & Allis Lee, near Dudley Depot - burned

Oct 1855 - Ephraim Ellis - shot in head by unknown

Feb 1856 - Joel Crocker, of Johnston County - last seen intoxicated, 
found drowned in Little River

Apr 1857 - Silas Boltin - intoxicated, fell on railroad track & hit by 
mail train, killed instantly

Aug 1857 - Barden Bass - found dead beside road - wound to body

Sep 1857 - James H Robinson - suicide - shot himself

Jan 1861 - Robert Cotton - drinking Laudanum (opium)

Mar 1861 - Benjamin Ellis - fall from horse against a lightwood stump

Apr 1861 - Marshal Brock - accidental drowning

Dec 1865 - Benjamin Best - cut his throat with own razor

Jun 1875 - Negro Peter, property of Philip Hooks - visitation of God

Nov 1882 - Mason Gin - freezing
