Wayne County, NC - Court - Wayne County Convention, 1872 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Carolina Messenger, J.A. Bonitz, Editor & Proprietor - July 1, 1872 - Wayne County Convention The delegates to the county convention assembled in the Court House in Goldsboro, according to previous adjournment on Saturday June 29th. The meeting was called to order by the chairman, Col. J.T. Kennedy. J.A. Bonitz and S.H. Denmark, secretaries. The townships were called, and all found to be largely represented by delegates. It was resolved that the delegation of each township appoint as many committee men as it has justices of the peace, and that the gentlemen so chosen, by all the townships, shall constitute a committee who shall consult and recommend suitable candidates for the various offices to be filled. Under this resolution the following were announced the nominating committee: Saulston – Jesse Benton and J.B. Parks Nahunta – Wm. Thompson, F.I. Becton and J.M. Gardner Holden – Wm. Hooks and P.B. Scott Pikeville – Gray C. Garriss and A.J. Finlayson Fork – A.L. Sasser and B.H. Barden Goldsboro – Rufus Edmundson, W.H. Borden, S.H. Denmark, S.D. Phillips and Nathan Adams New Hope – Louis Whitfield and John I. Herring Indian Springs – Fred C. Patrick and David J. Broadhurst Brogden – A.T. Grady, Cullin Casey and Jesse Bizzell Grantham – N.B. Stevens and D.A. Grantham After consultation, the committee returned and reported the following recommendations: House of Representatives Sheriff Daniel E. Smith Henry J. Sauls Benjamin Aycock Register Treasurer S.H. Denmark Gray C. Garriss Surveyor Coroner Jas. M. Gardner Thos. T. Hallowell Commissioners John Ivey, Geo. C. Buckam, D.A. Grantham, Nathan Adams and Wm. Hooks On motion the recommendations were considered separately which resulted in the adoption of the entire ticket. On motion the nominations were made unanimous and J.A. Bonitz, B.H. Barden and B.F. Hooks were appointed a committee to notify the gentlemen of their nominations and request their acceptance.
