Wayne County, NC - Exum Smith Apprentice Bond, 1835

State of N. Carolina}  At a Court of Pleas
       Wayne County }  & Quarter Sessions
began held for the County aforesaid on the
third Monday of August 1835 It being the
17th day of Said month.
  Present: Gabe Sherard  }
           N. Washington }   Esquires
           C. Coors      }
Ordered that Exum Smith now of the age of thirteen
  years be bound unto Elisha Saser until he arrives
  at lawful age.

   STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA,}
    Wayne      COUNTY      }
This Indenture, made the 17 day of Aug in the year of our Lord one 
thousand eight hundred and thirty five between Elisha Sasser of the 
County aforesaid, of the one part and Gab Sherard Chm of same County, 
of the other part, Witnesseth, that the said Gab Sherard doth put, 
place and BIND unto the said Elisha Sasser a certain Boy named Exum 
Smith aged 13 years with the said Elisha Sasser to live, after the 
manner of an Apprentice and Servant, until he shall attain the age of 
twenty-one years. During which time, the said Apprentice his said 
Master faithfully shall serve, and his lawful commands every where 
gladly obey, and not absent himself from his Master’s service without 
leave; but in all things as a good and faithful Servant shall behave.
   And the said  Elisha Sasser doth covenant, promise, and agree, with 
the said G. Sherard that he will teach and instruct, or cause to be 
taught and instructed, the said Apprentice to read and write, and also 
the art and mystery of a farmer and constantly find and provide, for 
the said Apprentice, during the term aforesaid, sufficient Diet, 
Washing, Lodging and Apparel, fitting for an Apprentice; and also other 
things necessary both in sickness and health.
   In witness whereof, the parties have hereunto set their Hands and 
Seals the day and year aforesaid.

NOTES: 
1.  No witnesses signatures on this bond. 
2.  Wayne Co. NC Apprentice Bonds,  G103.2020673   1800-1841.
3.  This Exum Smith is known in Union County, NC as John Exum Smith, 
    born 3 Sept. 1823, died 8 Sept. 1900. Married 1st Nancy Lilly 
    Austin, d/o Bryant & Temperance Williams Austin. 
    Children: Eve Ann Smith, John Stanley Smith, Temperance J. Smith, 
    Calvin M. Smith, William Jasper Smith and George Webster Smith.
    He married 2nd Leah Tucker Drye the widow of Charles Drye - no 
    issue.
4.  1872 Feb. 29 Wayne Co. NC will of Henry Sasser indicates son as 
    Elisha Sasser. 
5.  Elisha Sasser wed Esther Smith d/o Cullen & Patience Boyet Smith.
6.  About 1816 Cullen & Patience Boyet Smith moved from Wayne Co., NC 
    Anson (now Union) Co., NC.
