Mortgage - Know all men by these presents that I Hiram L. Grant of Goldsboro, 
county and state aforesaid in consideration of the sum of fifteen hundred 
dollars to me advanced and the further promise of advance not to exceed one 
thousand dollars do hereby bargain, sell and assign to John S. D. Grant of the 
town of Putman, county of Windham and state of Connecticut my entire crops to be 
grown this year (aside from the rents) of cotton, corn, peas and fodder &c. Also 
all corn fodder, peas, cotton seed and farming implements now on hand, together 
with 1 horse, buggy and harness, 4 mules with carts and harness, 1 two horse 
wagon and harness and my entire interest in all buildings now situated on the 
tract of land LEASED from H. Weil and Bros known as Waynesboro tract. The 
condition of the above sale are that should the said Hiram L. Grant pay to John 
S. D. Grant the above named amount on or before Jan 1st 1872 then this sale to 
be void; on the failure of said H. L. Grant to pay John S. D. Grant, he the said 
John S. D. Grant is authorized to take possession of said property mentioned in 
the above bill of sale to satisfy said debt with interest added from the date of 
this Mortgage. In witness whereof the said Hiram L. Grant hath hereunto set his 
hand and seal this 26th day of January 1871.
