Wayne County, NC - Anna Maria (Rhodes) Hill Letters ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wayne County Vernon May 6, 1848 My Dearest Anna In accordance with your request in the last letter I scant myself to write you, though I have nothing to communicate except my unabated love & that you are aware of. I could not tell you if I ware to try how I missed you all & my Darling Jimma in particular. I hope the Dear littel feller has recovered entirely befor now. Kiss him seetly for me & dont let him forget me by name. At least speake to him often a bout Grandma & tell him how I love him. Oh how I miss him when I go to the table. Tell him Tom Cat misses him too, he gets fed oftener than befor, he manefested so much attachment to him. Give my love to the Dr & tell him his letter was received with much pleasur as it brought the assurance of your saft arrival home. I hope his anciety was sufficient to cause him to come with you the next time you pay me a viset. Oh my Dear Anna how much we have to be thankful to the Supream Being for & among the rest for his Protection & care in sending you hear & back in safty & restoring you all to the armes of your Dear friends. Oh Lord God almity increas thy goodness & give the Holy Spiret ever to all with my child & all my beloved relations, this is my daily suplication. Cousin Elizh Hall came up in a bout a weake & spent a weake with me. Indeed it helped me along a good deal. Willy was with her & Mr. Hall came for them & spent several days. Sister Hatch & Lou & Anne Hatch are with me now & join sending love to ypu & sayes tell Cousin Anna to write to her. But all the company that I could have is not like that of my own Anna & her seet boy. But I enjoy their society & am grateful for it. It will be a long time befor I can pass a bout the hous without seeing something to remind me of you. I have finished the quilt I began in Onslow & am having it quilted & if Providence permits me to visit you next fall I desighr leaving it with you. If you see Mr Collier tell him he must be sure to let me know when he returns to Alabama in the fall, for I want to return with him. Tell him I wont be any trouble to him, only to take care of my bagage. How did Ceala like to see Causa & how are thay all geting on. Tell them all howdy & that I hope to see them all in the fall & hear a good report of them. I hope you will have them neerer to you another year. It is bad policy to have them so far from you. Write me & tell me all a bout them & every thing els that you are interested in as your letters will be my gratest enjoyment. If you see Uriah [name crossed out] give him my love & tell him I will write him soon, would have done so befor now but had nothing to say that would interest him. I have just heard his old flame is to be married soon. Her father tells it & of cours it must be so. The gentleman is a stranger & I have forgotten his name. Do write me what Betty has done with her Beaugh. Give my love to her. I surpose she is too happy to think of me much to write to me. Remember me affectionatly to Brother & all the family. I hope he returns from Missippa in health & sucseeded in his business to his satisfaction. I surpos you have goan to hous keeping befor this & now Dear Anna you will have to put on the Strong Armer of Patians to carre you through with comfort to your self & those a bout you, for much will depend on your starting write, & you will have much need of meditation & prair to your Heavenly Father for wisdom & his guidance in all maters. Let Energa & decision Carracerize all your actions. Never scold any body. If cam talking wont do scolding will not. Its a dreadful habet to get in & worse for a Mother. I do think half the misforten of sister Hatchs children is owing to her scolding them so much. It hardened them & thay lost respect which all children should have for their parents. Teach your Dear littel one to love God & that will insure his love to his Earthly parents. Give all your instructions mildly both to children & servants, but decidedly. Let obedience be the first leson you teach your Dear son. He has such a seet disposition it will be but littel trouble to teach him if you begin wright with him. You must nurs him good & tell him I want to run away with him when I come. Lanny sayes she wants to see you vary much but she thinks she wants to see littel Jimma a littel more then you. She is a fin girl. I like her vary much. The Dr is goan to Goshen to day to have Cambriges leg taken off again, so you much imagin all he would say if he was hear. His feet is not well, he goes a bout a littel in the Carriage. The servants all beg to tell you howdy for them. When you write say a word or too a bout Neeham for Carolins satisfaction. Adieu my Beloved one. May the Lord bless you spiretually & temperally. Believe me ever your affectionat Aunt Anna Maria Hill P.S. Tell Sopha howdy Dudley, NC May 7th Mrs Anna M.
