Wayne County, NC - Anna Maria (Rhodes) Hill Letters ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mt. Stirling Dec. 14th, 1874 My Dear Husband, This evening brings the mail, and I hope news of home. There is nothing new to tell of hers. The event so anxiously expected being a thing of the future. Helen is well except some pain, I suppose the rheumatism in her hand. Since yesterday morning it has been raining, and Mrs. B. and I congratulate ourselves upon being here instead of wandering around the country to find Gaston. I suppose Martin told you of our adventures, beginning with taking the old road instead of the new. However we reached Gaston by twelve and got here in good time. Helen has been talking of writing to Connie and Annie, but her hand is not well enough, so send love instead. Syd has come with the mail, and no letter for me. I fear Alec is sick, or something else has prevented your writing. A letter from Maria to her mother says we have a new minister. Did Connie and Annie go last Sunday? And how come on Connie’s Eggnog. I was so anxious to hear from Joe. He promised to write (illeg) Sallie (illeg) and something of himself. Tell Annie I am hoping for a long letter from her and Genie if he is yet at home. How would he like to learn telegraphing? I see in New Orleans papers an advertisement for one hundred telegraphers to put on some R. R. They offer 200 dollars a month. What of our boys in the canebrakers? Did Roth get the dress and go to the party? And what of his Florida trip? What is (illeg) doing? And will he write his mother a letter? Does he say his lessons? The measles are everywhere, or so Maria (illeg) writes. I hope Annie will keep Alec at home until I come. If you could do anything with the garden, it would give her pleasant occupation with her flowers and Alec can be busy with his wheel barrow taking in manure, and put’ around every rose, not forgotten those put our last Spring. Helen has told Mrs. B. and Miss Lucy that I don’t like kissing, and they amuse themselves laughing at me. But all agree that how gladly would I tonight give you a Goodnight’s kiss. Most lovingly, your wife. Anna M. GARBER Dr. A. M. GARBER Livingston Sumter County Alabama ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
