Wayne County, NC - Anna Maria (Rhodes) Hill Letters ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wayne County Vernon January 1857 Dear Dr. I have just received a letter from Uriah, saying you have had quite an excitement in your county with the negroes and that Wright was thought to be knowing to it, and Anna wrote me some time back he continued to be a bad boy. Now I drop you this few lines to suggest to you perhaps it would be best to sell him, as one bad Negro is apt to spoil the others and better one should suffer than many, especially when he brings it on himself. He has had fair warning what would be the consequence and he must abid the consequence. It would have a good effect on the rest if they are disposed to trespass on you, thinking you can’t sell them. I leave it entirely with you and Anna to do as you may think best about it, believing you will do write. In the premises you have my free consent to sell him. Negroes are high now and he will likely command a better price now then some time hence. The Dr. sends his best respects to you. We are all in tolerable health except colds. He says he intends to go to Alabama in the fall and if he should decline which I do not think he now expects to do, I must go if providence permits and an opertunity offers a traveling companion. Give my love to Anna and all the dear children and relations that may enquire about me. We have nothing new here that would interest you, so I will conclude with my highest respects to yourself and beg you ever to believe me your true friend and affectionate connection. May Heaven bless you and yours. Anna M. HILL Bladen Springs December 21, 1857 My dear Friend, I drop you this few lines to inform you of our movements since we parted. Well agreeable to our agreement with your Pa; we left Dr. DARDENS the 15 inst. & arrived hear through the Devin Protection in safety on the 16th. The Dr. kept on to Demopiless to try to make some arrangements with his son and I am happy to inform you he has agreed to accept his Fathers first offer. Consequently their will be no lawsuits. Betty and Connie and children and myself propose to remain here until the 3rd of January and on that morning, that is the 3rd, we expect to take the boat and be at Moscow on Monday morning before day and wish you to have some conveyance for us to reach you there as early as convenant. I dislike very much to travel on the Sabath, but it seames that it is the only sure chance to get a boat about the time we wish to start. We would start on Wednesday but Mr. (illeg) and family have not arrived and we would like to see them before we leave, so we have appointed the lastest possible day that would allow us to be with you at Christmas. Your Pa and Dr. BARDEN? Think it best to get off at Moscow. We have no more news that would interest you much. Love to all. Believe me as ever yours affectionately. Anna M. HILL P.S. Kiss the children for me. The last letter from Kate they expected to be heare by the 15th inst. It was mailed in New Yorke. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
