L. Grant, Secretary-Treasurer Directors: H. L. Grant L. N. Grant C. E. Wilkins February 28th 1920 My dear Children, I am sending you from the sale of the buildings $5000.00 and later when the balance of the purchase money is paid an equal amount. The building will be deeded to nine men who will have the Company incorporated and as such get a long term loan and then pay me the notes for $40000.00. When I send you the other $5000.00 I will have a deed for the home place made out to me, so I can control it and make the best disposition in the interest of you all. I do not intend any immediate sale. You children held $15000.00 in stock and I had $17500.00. The mortgage of $20000.00 has been reduced to $17000.00. I issued only stock to cover the assessed value for the taxes $32500.00. The three brick houses sold for $16000.00 cash. From this I paid obligations and invested $10000.00 in 7 per ct securities from which I will receive the interest. Of this sale from which I will receive $33000.00, so I am letting you children have $25000.00 and later as much more. When I dispose of the farm as I hope to do this fall you may expect a part of that, I am going to keep and have at interest an amount to supply my wants which will not be many. I can then go and come as the inclination dictates. In truth I do not want the responsibility of its care. Your children are and will soon be an additional expense for their education, and this check with others to follow will make all of you feel more comfortable when looking towards the future. While I managed with the help of your dear mother to give youths very best I could under the circumstances, I want to spare you all the many anxious moments that was ours to accomplish what we did for you. I only wish your mother could have been spared to us and permitted to enjoy this great pleasure with me and perhaps she does, who knows? To her in a great measure not to be ever forgotten by you, I feel indebted for the ability to do this generous act. Because of her counsel, loyalty and frugality that characterized all of the fifty years of our happy and devoted home life in Goldsboro the credit is largely due. Her gift to me of you dear children, and the moral and christian environment ever during your young life makes this gift comparatively vauleless when this is taken into consideration.
