Wayne County, NC - Letters William & Emmet Robinson Collection Johnston County Heritage Center Reference Box, P.C.1.1. George Ragsdale Collection Kinston July 7th 1863 My Dear Pau; I have just returned from one of the most meansome and laborous tramps since I joined the service. Our trip has proven a complete failure, however, being conducted by an officer unaquainted with the locality of the country or the manuvering of the enemy when enters this portions of the State. Had the expedition been conducted by Maj Nechercute the yankees would have been badly whipped or, captured. We left camp in unusual fine spirits to meet the enemy on their return from the R.R. Genl Martin placed us behind the breastworks at Hines' mile where we remainded during Sunday. We then marched to the free bridge in Jones Co. where the enemy had preceeded us and we all came to the conclusion that we had some hard fighting to do. The enemy were plainly visible some four hundred yards from us and in a few minutes our artillery opened on theirs shooting a shell through Sheriff Whitaker's house which made the yanks as well as the inmates of the house skierk. They returned the fire after a few minutes and I thought the bale of new men behaved well and seemed anxious for the pay Astonishing to us we received the order to fall back as the yanks were coming in our rear and we came back My feet are in a most woeful condition from those new boots. I fear I will have esysifelatous? inflamation from present appearances. We start probably for another trip soon but I shall most respectivelly decline.
